A former colleague pointed me to his brother's work on systems dynamics in education.
Systems dynamics is a technique for modeling complex systems that don't have linear behavior. It is helpful in economic analysis and other disciplines.
Systems dynamics is supported by several software packages, including
netLogo and Stella
A popular work in systems dynamics is the world3 model (wikipedia link), used to generate different scenarios of world population growth and resource depletion.
